True improvisation on the drum set lies in your ability to vary a groove without changing the basic structure of it.  In Funk, Rock, Soul, and Blues grooves, (basically backbeat oriented grooves), the kick and snare, for the most part, are the skeleton or basic structure of the groove. Hi hat, cymbals, ghost notes, etc. are the "decorative" parts of the groove. It's difficult to maintain the skeleton of a groove while varying the decorative voices. The ability to do this well is what produces a large vocabulary and makes you valuable to other musicians who often want to hear different versions of a basic groove idea they may have for a song. In The Pocket Groove Improvisation will help you develop these skills!!
